Conference Summary: The latest media research findings

Once a year, the Advertising Research Foundation asks the top thinkers and practitioners what the future holds for media research and audience measurement. The highlights of the 2010 conference have been summarized by Suzanne Raitt, VP Marketing & Innovation, Canadian Newspaper Association.

Postmedia unveils website, logo

Postmedia Network Inc. has launched its new corporate website www.postmedia.com. The site features a company profile, press releases and a new logo created for the company by Rethink Toronto. Paul Godfrey, President and Chief Executive Officer of Postmedia Network described the colourful new design as “bold and dynamic … something that exemplifies a first to the future view.”

Ron Brock passes away

Ron Brock, a long time employee of the Enterprise-Bulletin (ON), passed away on August 24 at the age of 88. Following in the footsteps of two of his brothers Brock joined the Bulletin in 1938, setting lines of type in the compositing department. Brock stayed at the Bulletin for 30 years, working his way up the ranks to the position of advertising manager.

Queens Park Day September 15

Publishers and editors from Ontario community newspapers are invited to attend the OCNA Queens Park Day on Wednesday September 15. Afternoon discussion sessions will give members an opportunity to meet with MPPs and various ministers to talk about public policy issues relevant to the community newspaper industry. A Publisher’s Reception will be held following the meetings.

New publisher at Comox Valley Record

Mark Warner, president of Black Press Vancouver Island, announced that Joanna Ross will become the new publisher at the Comox Valley Record (BC) effective September 27. Ross takes over the position from Nathan Weathington who was recently appointed as the new publisher at The Morning Star in Vernon, B.C.

Strong second quarter for Canadian newspapers

Newspapers across the country are experiencing healthy financial growth this quarter. Vancouver-based newspaper publisher Glacier Media Inc. attributed increased revenues to larger advertising revenue and the general economic revival of the industry. FP Canadian Newspapers Limited Partnership (FPLP) also reported increased second quarter earnings as a result of a 5.3% reduction in operating expenses such as lower newsprint and delivery costs. Quebecor, which controls the Videotron cable company and the Sun Media chain of newspapers, reported a 5 percent rise in revenue.
