Canadian Community Newspaper Association Membership

CCNA membership is based on membership in one of seven regional community newspaper associations. Each regional association has its own criteria for full active membership. Community newspapers that do not meet these criteria cannot join CCNA as full active members but may be eligible to apply for an alternative form of membership.

Membership in CCNA may be achieved in one of three ways: as a General Member through one of seven regional community newspaper associations affiliated with CCNA, as a Sustaining Member directly through CCNA or as a Fellowship Member.

General Membership

All community newspapers that qualify for an active membership in one of the seven regional community newspaper associations affiliated with CCNA can apply for a general member status. Each regional association has its own criteria for Active Membership. Upon regional acceptance of a newspaper's membership application, the newspaper is automatically enrolled as a CCNA member. CCNA General Members enjoy the full benefits of both the CCNA and their regional association. Annual member dues are calculated based on the newspaper's weekly first-edition circulation.

CCNA General Members are entitled to the following benefits

Sustaining Membership

CCNA Sustaining Membership is open to all newspapers that do not qualify for Active Membership in the seven regional associations (such as ethnic newspapers and other alternative newspapers) as well as friends and suppliers of the community newspaper industry. Sustaining members are entitled to all of the benefits given to General Members, with the exception of the right to vote at members' meetings. Sustaining members are ineligible to hold a seat on the CCNA Board of Directors.

Applications for CCNA Sustaining Membership are submitted to the CCNA Board of Directors for approval. Annual membership fee is $400 plus applicable taxes.

Fellowship Membership

The CCNA Board of Directors (link) may approve as a fellow of the association any retired member or professional person who has been with a member newspaper, is no longer engaged in the newspaper business and is not eligible for membership in one of the affiliated associations. Nominations for these fellowships must be submitted in writing by the approved affiliated association. Fellows are entitled to all the services of CCNA but shall not have the right to vote at members' meetings. Fellowship members are ineligible to hold a seat on the CCNA Board of Directors (link).
