The Canadian Newspaper Association (CNA) and the Canadian Community Newspaper Association (CCNA) are two separate organizations that partnered to create one strong industry voice for newspapers in Canada. Combined, the two associations represent over 830 daily, weekly, and community newspapers in every province and territory in Canada. The CNA and the CCNA are now co-managed by one CEO but remain governed by two separate Boards of Directors in order to preserve the uniqueness of the programs and services offered to each member. By combining resources and collaborating on a variety of different projects the integrated association provides more relevant services to all newspaper members, while also increasing the profile and effectiveness of the newspaper industry in Canada.
Canadian Newspaper Association (CNA)
The Canadian Newspaper Association (CNA) is a non-profit organization, representing Canadian daily newspapers (English and French) with circulations ranging from 1,500 to almost 500,000 per day.
Today, the primary role of the CNA is to represent the needs of its members and the public in three major areas:
As an advocate in public policy the CNA enables newspapers from coast to coast to speak with a unified voice when promoting newspaper interests to governments, regulators and the general public. These interests include such issues as taxation, employment standards, recycling, freedom of information, privacy and copyright. In this capacity the CNA monitors, analyzes and lobbies against legislation potentially harmful to newspapers and freedom of the press.
The CNA contributes to the ongoing evolution of the newspaper industry by raising awareness and promoting the benefits of newspapers to both advertisers, media planners and newspapers. The CNA prepares newsletters, case studies, advertising effectiveness research and informational presentations to highlight the power and effectiveness of newspapers and their websites.
The CNA acts on behalf of its members in a proactive manner for the benefit of newspaper groups and independents alike. Member services include educational webinars, legal resources, linage reports, regional seminars, newsletters, award ceremonies and Ink & Beyond - the annual industry conference and trade show.
Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA)
The Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA) is the national voice of the community press in Canada. CCNA currently represents more than 700 English-language community newspapers, with a combined circulation of more than 12 million copies per week.
Today, CCNA celebrates more than 80 years of representing the community press in Canada. The CCNA is comprised of seven regional associations:
- Atlantic Community Newspapers Association
- Quebec Community Newspapers Association
- Ontario Community Newspapers Association
- Manitoba Community Newspapers Association
- Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association
- Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association
- British Columbia & Yukon Community Newspapers Association
Together, the national and regional associations work together to represent the needs and interests on their members while fostering freedom of the press, credibility, co-operation, growth and profitability in the Canadian newspaper industry.
Some of the specific services and programs offered to CCNA members include:
Canadian Media Circulation Audit
The largest Canadian-owned circulation auditing system, providing publishers, advertising agencies and advertisers with reliable audited circulation figures for more than 600 publications.
